Beware the Ides of March

 Beware the Ides of March…..
It was on an otherwise calm March day back in Ancient Rome when ruler of most of Europe, Asia Minor, North Africa and the Middle East was killed in cold blood.  His departure was at the hands of several Senators.. all acting in what they felt was best for their country at the time… for Julius Caesar had designs to move the Republic to a monarchy.. Or so it seemed.  Who has such designs this week??

You could call this ‘Rivalry Week’ as there are many teams with a lot of baggage playing each other. Some hate drama…I happen to love it. There really is one thing that can make grown men act like high school cheerleaders: Softball. On to the games!
10am: Lux(new Keg) vs Doghouse. Doghouse +6 . Over/under: 30 runs
Analysis: Lux(new Keg) has perfected the team strategy of keeping the smallest roster possible, but making sure those roster players can all mash and show up week to week. This has worked as they’ve won more games with 9 players than I’ve ever seen. If the league issued funds per team based on ‘population’ then they’d get Alaska’s share of the wealth. But I digress. Only problem with this surgical strike team approach is that it’s hard to absorb injuries when you only play with 9. Team leader and fitness cult leader Ryan Young has been nursing a bad leg injury since the week before Manila. This was evidently bothering him as he walked home the game winning run last week against Bulldogs. Still, these guys have proven that as long as you mash, you’ll be in the game. With the right match up I can see these guys causing fits for a lot of teams in the playoffs.
Doghouse is a team that started off hot early in the season but has been on a slide of late. Their normally big bats in the middle of the lineup cooled down a bit as this was very prevalent in the 3 straight losses against the Keg. Naturally though as a team that plays to the level of their opponent they do not shy away from big games.. and this Lux series should be a good one. Wayne Lau will be taking the mound and looking to atone for the 22 runs he gave up in his last outing. With EH, Loo and Fares all out for this one Coach Harrison is going to have to be crafty in protecting Dave Mann in the lineup as the Cave Mann will need to drive in a bunch of runs to keep the Doghouse in the games. That’s a lot to ask for as Chad Boyd and Hasbun mash their way to 2 wins.
11:30: Doghouse vs. Lux(new Keg), Lux(new Keg) -5 Over/under: 22 runs
Lux(new Keg) lets off the gas a little in this one but we still like their experienced bats to take the win
Style points award goes to: Doghouse for those lovely pink logo’d jerseys. Mwwah!

1pm: Outback vs. Santa Fe,   Santa Fe – 8; Over/under: 25 runs
Santa Fe will be licking their wounds in this match up having dropped the last 3 games 2 of which came against Brewhouse last week. Outback is ‘sore-ing’ high after their hard fought victory last weekend against Cantor. Sunday Money had the pleasure of watching a very entertaining set of games OB played against Cantor on March 7th. I like the way Eddie O delivered veteran pitching to keep his ball team in the game. He’ll need to do more of the same to keep SF at bay. What is a perfect game for the Red Men as they’ll look to right the ship against OB. Strange things could happen; especially if T.Mac has his men on a roll (they scored 12 runs in the first inning last week of game 1 vs. Cantor) but we see the Movers winning with ease.
Style points award goes to: Outback for that maple leaf patch on the right sleeve. Nice touch eh!

2:30pm Bulldogs vs Brewhouse Brewhouse -8; Over/under 28 runs GOTW!!
Many hung around last week for the highly anticipated match up between Brewhouse and Santa Fe, only to see the Brewcrew lower the boom against SF in both games. Angelosante may not stymie hitters the way Ronnie Moss once did but he does make teams put the ball in play and allows Flynn to enjoy his bat in the lineup. It will be the shock of the century if the Brewhouse do not win it all this year. A team with that many lefties and our leagues lenient rules regarding balls hit to left field mean that these guys rarely go a game with out batting around in the lineup at least once. Such lefty power brings us to the first real RIVALRY game this week as there are years of cold stares between Tony Bego and Jimmy Grandolfo of Bulldogs. Coach Grandolfo has his squad strongly sitting in 2nd place and he would love nothing more than to take 2 away from Bego today. Some say the beef has it’s roots in the great lefty debate of 2006 but we’ll never know for sure. One thing is for certain though, Mikosh didn’t drop big bucks on those new Sr League bats for nothing we like Vince, Gird and Wizzzwell to all be swingin’ for those fences all day long.
4pm HK Brew vs. Bulldogs, HK Brew – 6 Over/under 32
Fatigue will be a little bit of a factor here but my crystal ball on loan from Dom doesn’t show much of a turn around for the Bulldogs in Game 2. We do see some heavily argued calls in this one though as Joe Duke and Farbman come up big.
Style points award goes to: The Bulldogs team for those snazzy new roverplusnine pants.   They’ll set you back 60 goats a pair but they look damn comfortable and even Tap Out feels like Chad Boyd in them. www.roverplusnine.com

5:30  exKEG (HK Hogs) vs. Cantor, Cantor +5 Over/under 25
Rivalry week continues with Keg/Hogs vs Cantor!  It’s been well documented how many players on Cantor used to suit up for the Keg and Prosser hasn’t missed a day of Flinstone vitamins in preparation for these 2 games.
This match up burned me big time as the new boyz in Carolina Blue trounced what will know be known as the old Keg team or new HK Hogs team. (yes even we are confused by this, but we’ll roll with it) Ken Clark pitched a gem as Prosser’s squad hung 20 up on Powell’s team.  Things are a bit different this time around though as the Keg is coming off of 3 straight wins against Doghouse (2 vs. Loo) and looking to make it 5 in a row here.  Both teams will be without big bats as this is the same night as the AmCham Ball but we feel like with all the history between these 2 squads it’ll be close.  We like the smooth hitting ways of Prosser, Clark to continue. The Cantor lineup up got a big boost last week when Dean Tzembelicos returned to the squad after ending his season long contract holdout.  The Dean-Machine went 4-6 and flashed the leather in the field.  Jeff Buhl needs to start hitting like the HR king he is though.  Mike Sac should also continue his surprising reliability on the mound too.
7pm Cantor vs Keg (Hogs), Hogs – 7 Over/under 28
The sticks should be warmed up big time by game 2 and we’re going to go out on a limb here and say that the Hogs should walk in this one.
Style points award goes to: Cantor for those sexy blue nighties,…ahem I mean jerseys.  Ken Clark is counting the different pant combinations possible with these new threads.
So there you have it.. lots to watch for this weekend.
See you at the ball field…
