The Senator in the Hot Seat

So what is the Senator going to with all his spare time in the Philippines?

I plan to work on my lawn bowling skills – a very popular sport in the Northern Philippines. I am also considering running for public office and starting my own fiefdom.

Why the move?

18 years in HK is long enough for an Amish boy from Pennsylvania. Besides, I may be able to have a starting position in the Manila softball league. I start negotiations next week with a few Manila teams in P. Burgos. Wish me luck and if any one wants to step forward to be my agent please contact me.

What assurances do we have that you actually are going to move? Remember we’ve been burned before! Mac and Rorky told us they were leaving and we went through all this rigamerole to get them out of here! Now they’re back and worse than ever!!!

The league gets no assurances whatsoever. If Mac and Rorky can do it so can I.

You are on record as saying you will still be coming to Hong Kong. How many times a year can we expect you?

Whenever Chris Mikosh gets lonely.

Including the Turkey’s, who is your favorite all time teammate that you played with? And no Senator like response, you must answer the question!

Purple Wayne, Wayne Chai, The Wayne Train, The Eskimo, whatever you want to call him. Wayne Lau.

Without looking it up can you tell us what the capital of Azerbaijan is

Ah, Fenwick?

What are you going to miss the most about Hong Kong?

The boys at King’s Park

Did it ever bother you that every Three’s Company episode was basically the same? You know, one big misunderstanding that miraculously got solved in the end! I mean what was wrong with Jack Tripper? No one could be involved in that many mishaps!

No, it never bothered me that Jack always got the short end of the stick – he was a wanker anyway. How can you feel sorry for Jack when Suzanne Sommers breasts were always so close by and ready….?

Who is the one team in the league you always loved playing against and why?

SportView. Because many of those boys have been in the league a long time, they are older than me and most of their wastelines are larger than mine.

Who is the one pitcher you hated the most to go against?

Sweet Loo – Mark Looram. It’s a love-hate thing. Batter against pitcher for too many years.

If you were starting a new team tomorrow and could take any one player from any era of the HKSPSA who would you take and why? Again, no Senator like responses!

Tough one. I’ve seen too many great players come and go in my 18 years in the HKSPSA. I have always enjoyed Eric Harrison’s skill sets and passion for the game and now that he has matured I’d have to go with the Big E. Great player!

Favorite all time movie?

For Love of the Game. Kevin Costner as Billy Chapel – an ageing ballplayer. Recommended viewing after the age of 45.

What bothers you more- Pistachio nuts that you can’t crack open or the juice that runs down your arm when squeezing water out of a can of tuna? You would think that after all this time they would have figured out how to get all the nuts open and how to safeguard against the juice running down your arm, but no! It still happens!! Any suggestions on how to improve this?

Geez, I eat pistachio nuts as they are and always enjoyed the extra crunchiness. If you don’t like to waste your time removing the shell eat pistachios like me. The half digested shells also help remove unwanted fecal matter build up as they move threw the digestive system. Now, you really don’t want me to answer the Tuna juice question , do you?

EDITOR’S NOTE- On second thought, yeah I’m glad you didn’t answer Tuna juice question! Probably should have given you a different alternative!

Greatest sporting event you ever watched, either on TV or live in person?

Penn State 27 vs Georgia 23 in the 1983 Sugar Bowl for the National Championship. I was there.

What was the worst draft pick of all time- The Jets taking Ken O’Brien over Marino, Blazers taking Sam Bowie over Jordan or Dom Martinetti taking Paulo Gomez over Willett Bird in the ’99 HKSPSA expansion draft?

I would have to say that Dom’s draft pick in the ’99 HKSPSA expansion draft was the most questioned in our coaches circle of the day. I suspect it was a heavy night of drinking that lead Dom to his choice. However, yours truly let a lot of good players get away during my coaching tenure. I managed to keep the more “troubled” players who obviously needed my guidance more than others and we still continue our counseling together in the off-season.

Big Foot- is it real and if so which Hong Kong softball player would be most likely related to him?

Big Foot is real! It would have to be Tim Noonan at size 15.

What is your biggest pet peeve? Mine is people that leave toothpaste sludge in the sink after brushing their teeth! Every time I go back to NY my brother still does it and it drives me nuts! Please make sure that never happens if I come visit you in the Philippines

No problem. Your room in the Philippines doesn’t even have a sink or running water. You’ll do just fine.

Who was your favorite- Moe, Larry or Curly?

I have enough stooges on Team Bulldogs but I’d have to say Curly was my favorite because I still sometimes “get a curly one going” in Wan Chai and other places.

What three Hong Kong softball players remind you the most of those three? Please specify by character….

Moe: That would be you Commish – Greg Flynn
Larry: Toss up between Jon Meyers & Troy Mackenzie
Curly: Toss up between Tim Guinan and John Kelly (JK)
