Rules Updates

By Ken 10/04/2012, 12:00am HKT

Some new/update rules to remember

A few of the new rules from the first few weeks...

1. Thrown Bats; at the umpire's discrection, any thrown bat will result in the play being immediately called dead, the batter is out and will be ejected from the game

2. Mercy Rule; 15 runs after 5, 10 runs after 6

3. Home Run; from the right field foul pole to the light pole in dead center, any ball over the metal fenceline is a home run. From the light pole to the left field foul pole, any ball over the padded temporary wall is a home run.

4. Extra-innings/time limits; any extra inning commencing 65 minutes after the start time will begin with the player who recorded the last out in the previous inning starting on 2b. No ties.

5. Home Plate; a line parallel to the 1b line, extending form the front corner of home plate on the 3b side to the back of the green mat will serve as an 'extension' of the black mat. A runner will be considered safe if he crosses this line before the ball reaches the catcher's glove.

Website Upgrades

By Ken 09/04/2012, 4:39pm HKT

Lots of big changes this year

We’ve upgraded the site and I’ve made a lot of changes in an effort to streamline it a little more. Everything’s still there, but it might be in a different spot (for example, directions to the field used to be in two different places, now it’s only under the About Us section) click around and try looking for whatever it is you want before blowing up my email box please….Also, please note that all of the stats/scores/player pics are all there for testing/demo purposes. Before the first pitch is thrown these will all be cleared out.

1.       The first thing you’ll notice on the site is a ‘Scoreboard Ribbon’ across the top of the home page. This ribbon will show games results from +/- 3 days from now. For example, on a Tuesday it will show all of the previous weekends games, On a Thursday it will show all of the upcoming games for the next weekend. This isn’t programmable, so I can’t change the timing, it simply is what it is. You’ll notice you can see what time a game is scheduled for, when it’s Final, or if it’s In Progress (more on that below).
2.       At the bottom of the home page we now have a fully automated League Standings graphic. The second a game goes ‘Final’ these standings will be updated. Team Names and Logos link to that teams page.
3.       League Leaderboard -  From the home page on the left hand menu there’s a link to the ‘Leaderboard’. All of these individual leaders are auto populated and will be tracked real time. If someone hits a homerun to take the league lead, the site will reflect it when it’s scored.
4.     League Button – on the home page, in the menu running across the top of the page you’ll see a blue ‘League’ button. This will take you to a new page from where you can jump to each of the new Team Pages. Also on this new page is a ‘Game Schedule’ (the entire league schedule), ‘Statistics’ (the entire leagues statistical data), and ‘Standings’ (a reflection of what’s currently on the home page).
5.       Historical Team – home page, left hand menu is a Historical Team button. With the upgrade to a ‘League package’ we lose the direct link to our historical data. But not to fear stat junkies, we haven’t lost the link forever. From this page you’ll be able to drill down to our old team pages. From there you can use the dropdown in the upper right hand corner to scroll all the way back to the 2008-09 season stats/rosters/etc. Most player profile pages have been linked to individual stats already. If you have prior year’s stats on the site you can use the drop down just above your name (see below) to go back to past seasons.
6.       Our web hosts, NGIN, have launched a free mobile app. I believe it’s only currently available for iPhone users, keep checking Android users.  This app will let you see your team’s schedule/results, stats, league standing, roster and upcoming league events. You can only follow 1 team at a time, but for an additional $3.99/year they will remove the ads and allow you to link to multiple teams. Check this link for more info Sport NGIN
7.       Finally…my favorite new feature…LIVE IN-GAME SCORING. That’s right, our stat keepers will be using an iPad/Laptop at the field to score our game electronically. You will be able to follow the action from the comfort of your living room (or wherever else you might be scouring the internet from). The program is still in BETA testing by the web host and there are some limitations to the software (to be addressed at a later time)  For a quick run through….

a.       Any game that has a green ‘In Progress’ can be followed live. Games that are final have all this info available too.
b.      Once launched, you’ll see a 7 inning score board with current inning, balls, strikes, outs
c.       The Game Summary will give you a quick look at the Game Leaders
d.      Play-by-Play tab will show you exactly that…every play that’s happened. (click on the + sign for more details on individual plays)
e.      Game Stats will give you a live box score, combined Team Stats or more in depth Player Stats

Season Opener Gathering at Doghouse

Before the first pitch is officially thrown, let's get out and show one of our sponsors some TLC. No better way than to show up in force the Thursday before opening day.  This is a good chance to get the new recruits out there mingling with the veterans and also to stir up some of those competitive juices before we start the season.  So please, put the word out to your team early and often about this event.

Who: EVERYONE!
What: Season Kick-off Dinner/Drinks
Where: Doghouse in Wan Chai
When: Thursday, Sept 13th, 7pm till whenever...
Why: Because they support us, so let's show them the same support back.
