This month saw the regular season come to close and the playoffs begin.
After a full slate on the February 3rd, and the final makeup doubleheader on the 10th between Morty's and Brew House, the playoff picture was set. With an impressive 23-5 line, The Big Bite was this year's #1 seed and regular season champ. Milbank completed their remarkable regular season run, going 21-1 in their final 11 doubleheaders, finishing with an overall record of 21-7 and the #2 seed. TBB's Andrew Wallis led the league in hits, while Brew's Rich Granara led in homers with 6. Chris Ivany led just about every pitching category, as The Big Bite's go-to hurler.
After a week break for Chinese New Year, the playoffs began on the 24th. #4 Starr and #5 Shore split their doubleheader, #2 Milbank swept #7 Outback, and #3 Brew House swept #6 Morty's. #8 Santa Fe and #1 Big Bite will begin their playoffs Mar3. As we begin March, six teams remain in the fight for this year's Bollenger Cup.
Congratulations to Brew House's John So and Santa Fe's Karen Morais on the Player of the Week honors for this month. And all 17 of the POTW winners this season! Beer always tastes a bit better when it's a prize :)
We kicked off 2018 on January 13th, after the long holiday. This was followed by two more full slates of games on the 20th and 27th.
Milbank continues their remarkable run, going a perfect 6-0 in the month (versus Shore, Santa Fe and Outback). They have now won 19 of their last 20 games after losing their first 6. We don't keep official records for these kinds of things, but it's safe to say this hasn't happened in a long time, if ever!
The Big Bite also had a great month, going 5-1. They now have a magic number of 1 to clinch the #1 seed for the upcoming playoffs. The Canadian team currently has a sparkling 21-5 record.
Congratulations to Players of the Week: Milbank's Liam O'Hagan, Outback's Sam Song, and The Big Bite's Troy Decoff.
The HKSPSA had three Saturdays of league games this month, and saw another eventful calendar year come to a close.
The 2017 champs, Milbank, continued their impressive run, closing out with a sweep of Morty's on Dec16. They have now won 13 of their last 14 games.
Last season's runner-ups, The Big Bite, remain perched on top of the standings with an impressive 16-4 season record. They won all four of their December games, all versus Shore.
Congratulations to the three POTWs: Mortys' Chris Burling, Outback's first POTW - Vince Cheung, and Milbank's Colin Jones.
Season's greetings to all our members and their families. See you on January 13th for the first softball Saturday of 2018!
